How often do we, in the writing game, use snowball analogies? It is easy to visualise, is depicted in many films both in the literal and the iconic sense. It is such an innocent mental video of a small piece of snow moving slowly and as it makes its way down the hill it grows bigger and bigger and moves faster and faster. A cliche some might say. Of course it is. Though when it comes to explaining the mind sometimes the most simple analogies can turn out to be quite accurate even at the risk of being accused of over-simplification. The mind is a snowball in more ways than we can possibly imagine.
Thoughts, motivations, inner fire, the spark come mostly from some sort of movement in a particular direction. The brain is packed full of neurones which spark off one after another in a not-so-random sequence that creates, no, determines emotion and indeed the course of our lives in the more grand scenario. The size of these emotions grows like that little snowball as the significance of each neurone being activated grows. One thought leads to another and the accumalation of both thoughts creates a bigger emotive reaction. The snowball gains size and pace.
The reasoning behind this outlining of how the brain works seeks to show you, dear reader, that with all the psycho-analysis done on the brain the simple fact is that the brain works like a snowball. One push and mental momentum takes it down that path be it progressive or indeed self-destructive. The path of the snowball is what we must be most concerned with, or rather where the initial push came from and where the direction is going. Understanding the source of everything we do and are, the main focus of TDL Fitness, is key to understanding ourselves and how we can better ourselves more fully.
The source of the snowball is key. Understanding where the initial push came from is crucial in measuring the significance of the momentum and the feeling it creates. We have two main culprits, as it were, to the initial momentum; the conscious (ourselves) and the sub/un-conscious (our minds). Many articles on the TDL Fitness website have already eluded to what the difference is between those two elements and I would direct you to some of them in the 'related posts' on this page. To cut a long story short the factor of control over our minds determines what is the most likely culprit of that initial push of that snowball down the hill.
Once we establish the source we can take the real significance out of that mental momentum, the emotion, thoughts and we can then measure a proper reaction from it. We can eliminate the issue of over-reaction, over-thinking and the pain associated with it if we can both understand and analyse the mental momentum that occurs within us. What a powerful skill that would be. How? If you know that the cascading thoughts and emotions came from the sub-conscious where little evidence or real world backing was used in the inital push then we ourselves have enough proof to discredit those thoughts and thus the momentum that came from that negative thought for example can slow down and indeed stop dead in its tracks if we want it to. That negative spiral of reaction and over-reaction to baseless thoughts can be eliminated if the momentum we felt in that emotion can lead us back to the source. It is the mental clue we need in order to save ourselves from the darkness that continues to threaten us from our own minds. It is the way out if we can accept that mental momentum tells us more than is at face value.
Similarly, on the more positive end if that inital push came from ourselves, the conscious, and most likely that push was positive, from real world evidence and proof then the mental momentum can be great, we can allow the momentum to grow and thus the positive/constructive reactions are both measured and positive, a chance for growth, learning and so this momentum should be encouraged and we can do that ourselves. We can allow this snowball to grow and grow so that we can get all the joy out of that. With this skill we all have the power to acheive we can appreciate what happens in our lives in a measured and, frankly, wonderful way. What a power it is to have and what a reaction we can gain from positive mental momentum created by us. A giant benefit of controlling our minds, controlling where that momentum came from can lead us to do so much. That positive mental momentum can be what helps us smile at ourselves in the mirror, and that momentum can make us go to the gym as we feel more self-confident and further still that momentum can grow and lead us to lose the social inhibitions we might have. All of this can be accomplished if we understood the source of mental momentum.
You might have read this far into an article still thinking that this is all too simplified. What do we have to gain from thinking that the mind is more complicated than that? Think of the mind as a pair of headphones; it gets more complicated to untangle if you think that it has to be that way. The more you simplify your thoughts and the processes that come with it the more you will be able to control it. Mental momentum as explained in this article can be one way of untangling the wires within your mind. Streamline your thoughts. This is what yoga, talk therapy, mindfulness helps you do. Part of the process of therapy is getting you to accept that the mind is much less complicated because the mind that wants to control you would rather you think it is too complicated so you don't focus on trying to control it. The mind hides behind the percieved complication so it can create the momentum on its own. Nine times out of ten this will not be good. Nine times out of ten is too much to give it the chance to work on its own.
Use the mental momentum, use the control availible to you to measure, apply significance and react accordingly. Like a great detective it is all about finding the clues that all add up. Be your own mental detective and soon you will discover what is real and what isn't. No greater ability of control can be found if you have the power to create your own mental momentum and ultimately your own mental freedom.
